Cholar Dal or Channa Dal ( No Onion No Garlic )
This is a special occasion dal which is slightly sweet and very delicious. This is a thick dal and can be served with Roti/Paratha/Luchi or Poori and even Fried Rice.To check the recipe for Cholar dal with Onion and Garlic ,click the link below:-
Cholar Dal ( With Onion and Garlic )
Preparation Time - 30 min dal soaking and other preparation 10 min
Cooking Time - 20 - 25 min
Ingredients :-
1. 1 and half cup Cholar Dal soaked in water for 30 mins (you can soak overnight) .
2. 3 inch Ginger.
3. Half of a big Tomato
4. 2 Indian chillies
5. 8-10 Almonds soaked in water
6. 1 tablespoon kishmis (raisins ) soaked in water
7. Dry roast and grind ( 1 and half teaspoon Jeera/cumin seeds,1/2 teaspoon coriander seeds,2-3 cloves,2-3 green cardamom, very little javetri/mace+ either half inch whole cinnamon or 1/8 th teaspoon of cinnamon powder)
Note if adding Cinnamon powder no need to dry roast it.
8. Whole Spices ( 1 bay leaf,1/4 teaspoon black peppercorns,2 green cardamom,2 cloves,1 dry red chilly ).
9. 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
10. Hing / Asafoetida very little around 1/8th teaspoon ( do not add too much hing or it may turn the dal bitter )
11.1/4 teaspoon cayenne/red chilly powder
13.1/4 paprika/kashmiri chilly powder
14. 1/2 teaspoon sugar
15. 1 teaspoon cumin/jeera powder
16. 1/2 teaspoon salt for boiling dal and 1 teaspoon during cooking or as per your taste.
17. Vegetable oil 2 - 3 teaspoon
18. 1 teaspoon Ghee
19. Water around 2 cups for boiling dal and for cooking around 1/3 rd cup
20. Dry Coconut cut into small pieces about 1 tablespoon.( If possible use fresh Coconut cut into small cubes ).
Note - This dal will be on the thicker side.
Preparation:-
1. Soak the dal in good amount of water either 30 mins or overnight.
2. Pressure cook the dal with around 2 cups water and little salt (I added 1/2 teaspoon ). ( I soaked for 30 mins and on high 4-5 whistles )
NOTE - Every pressure cooker differs and also depending on the soaking time adjust your cook time of the dal .
3. Grind the Ginger with little water.
4. Grind the soaked Almonds and raisins with little water.
5. Dry roast and grind the spices as mentioned in point 7 under ingredients.
6. Chop the Tomato into cubes.
7. Fry the coconut pieces.
Cooking:-
1. Take an utensil ( I used non stick ) add oil and the wholes spices mentioned in point 8 under ingredients.
2. Add the Hing/ Asafoetida and chopped tomatoes and cook till it becomes mushy.
3. Add the ginger paste ,turmeric powder,red chilly/cayenne powder,paprika/kashmiri red chilly powder,1 teaspoon cumin/jeera powder and mix
4. Cook till the oil starts seeping out then add the almond and raisin paste and mix.
5. Go on cooking till oil seeps out and then add the sugar and the boiled dal and mix.
6. Add 1/3rd cup water if required and add salt.
7. Lastly add the dry roasted masala as mentioned in point 7 under ingredients.
8. Add 1/8th teaspoon of Cinnamon powder ( You can also add the whole cinnamon approx half inch while grinding the dry roasted spices ).
9. Add the Indian chillies and the fried Coconut pieces.
10. Lastly add a teaspoon of ghee.
11. Serve the dal with either Roti/Paratha/Fried Rice/Poori or luchi and Enjoy.
