Bengali Tomato Chutney or Sweet Tomato Chutney or Tomato Chutney





This is the Bengali sweet chutney version of the fresh red tomato chutney .It is made with Bengali Panchforon  ( 5 spice mix ) ,minced ginger,sugar and also some other ingredients like Raisins or kishmis,Dates or Khejur or Aamsotto can be added.Different household have their own versions.


Preparation Time -5 min
Cooking Time - 10 min

Ingredients:-

1. 1 and half red ripe Tomatoes.
2. Raisins.
3. Minced Ginger (about 1/2 teaspoon )
4. 1 fresh green chilly/dry red chilly ( optional ) I did not add.
5. Bengali Panchforon ( 5 spice mix )[It contains methi or fenugreek seeds,nigella or onion seeds,jeera or cumin seeds,fennel seeds or mouri and either Radhuni or black mustard seeds ]
My Panchforon had radhuni and no Mustard so I added little more than 1/8th teaspoon of black mustard seeds.
6. Sugar as needed ( I used 3 tablespoon ).
7. Pinch Of Salt.
8. Teaspoon of oil ( vegetable or Mustard oil )
9. Water very little ( if needed )
10. Pinch of roasted jeera/cumin seeds powder( just dry roast some cumin seeds and grind it )

Preparation:-

1. Chop the tomatoes.
2. Mince the ginger.
3. Slit the green chilly if using .

Cooking:-

1. Take an utensil add oil.Add the Bengali panchforon let it sizzle in the oil.If adding dry red or green chilly add it now.
2. Next add the ginger and cook for 30 second and add the tomatoes.Mix and cover cook till tomato melts and raw smell is gone.
3. Next add the sugar,raisins/kismish and pinch of salt and the raisins.
4. If needed add sprinkle of water and wait til the tomato and sugar blends and you get a chutney like consistency.
5. Lastly sprinkle the dry roasted cumin/Jeera powder.
